アメリカ合衆国が6月7日、ネバダ核実験場で行った未臨界核実験の実施に対し、宗務総長名による抗議文を6月8日付で送付しました。

抗議文

　このたび、貴国が通算１７回目となる未臨界核実験を行ったことに対し、深い憤りを覚えます。

 　昨年の同時多発テロに対する報復としてアフガニスタンへの武力攻撃が実行され、多くの人びとが絶望の淵から、未だ立ち直っていない状況の中で、さらには、核兵器をそれぞれ保有していると思われるインドとパキスタンの間での危機が迫る中、あえて今回の実験が行なわれたことは、人類の平和への願いを踏みにじる行為であり、決してゆるされるべきものではありません。

　今私たちに求められているのは、さまざまな民族、文化の違いを認め、共に生きあえる世界を実現することであります。

　私たちは仏教徒として、その願いを裏切り、いのちの尊厳を奪う貴国の未臨界核実験に厳重に抗議するとともに、ただちに実験を中止され核兵器廃絶の道を歩まれるよう強く要望いたします。

Letter of Protest

Dear Mr. President,

We feel great indignation over your country's 17th subcritical nuclear testing, which was conducted at the testing site in Nevada on June 7, 2002.

Since last fall, military operations have been carried out in Afghanistan as retaliation for the September 11th attacks, and many people are still suffering in the nadir of their despair. Furthermore, nuclear-armed India and Pakistan are on the verge of opening a full-scale war. Under such circumstances, the U. S. executed the nuclear testing, which tramples on our hope for peace and cannot be excused in any way.

What is urgently needed for us today is to realize the world in which all people can live together, recognizing each other's differences in ethnicity and culture. As Buddhists who cherish all life and share such hope, we strongly protest against your country's subcritical nuclear testing, which goes contrary to our hope and impair the dignity of life. We urge you to stop the further testing immediately, and to strive for the elimination of all nuclear arms.
